Looks to start from

The whole book

How it is made

The same order of work as a modern tailor. The clothes are not shirts.

  1. 01

    Choose a style

Start from a look in the book, or describe the silhouette, the cloth, and the occasion yourself. Collar choices, on a shirt site, become neckline, sleeve, ipele, and train here.

  2. 02

    Choose the fit

Come to the studio in Ushafa, Bwari, book a home visit in Abuja, or measure at home with the points Mairy uses. After the first fitting, the numbers stay on your size card.

  3. 03

    Agree the making

You receive a written quote before any cloth is cut. Nothing is owed until you accept it. Aso-ebi runs begin with one sample, not with twenty guesses.

  4. 04

    Sewn, fitted, collected

The first fitting is part of the work. The garment is adjusted before you take it home, or before it is shipped. Then it is yours.

The size card

Measured once, kept for the next invitation.

Bust, waist, hip, shoulder, bodice, and length are taken the way a Nigerian tailor actually cuts — not from a UK size alone. After the first fitting, those numbers stay on file at the studio. The next gown does not start from zero.

Aso-ebi desk

One cloth. Many bodies. A sample before the run.

Aso-ebi is one silhouette and one cloth, graded for many bodies. Mairy cuts a sample in the celebrant’s size first. The run starts only after that sample is approved. Guests are measured. Nobody is squeezed into a single pattern with the side seams let out.

“Fit first. Cloth second. The occasion is only the reason to begin.”

Mairy Stitches

The maker

Mairy Stitches is a young one-woman house in Ushafa, Bwari, Abuja. She cuts made-to-measure clothes for Nigerian women: the gown that has to last the owner of the dance, the introduction set you can sit down in, the court dress with sleeves you chose on purpose.

The label on the garment reads Mairy Stitches.
